Windows, mirrors, and glass shower doors can be a hassle to clean, with stains and marks that quickly reappear. While there are many products on the market specifically designed to clean glass surfaces, Kate Jones, a green home and lifestyle influencer, has a homemade solution that she says will leave glass “shiny.”
Kate is the driving force behind My Plastic Free Home on Instagram and TikTok (@my_plastic_free_home), and co-founder of The Natural Living Shop (@thenaturallivingshop).
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “You won’t believe the secret ingredient in my homemade glass cleaner that will leave shower doors, windows and mirrors sparkling and streak-free in no time. It’s cornmeal. “.
While you may be more used to using cornmeal for cooking and baking, Kate recommends adding the natural thickening agent to cleaning solutions as well.
This is due to the texture of the cornmeal. As cornstarch granules are abrasive in nature, they can gently remove any build-up of dirt without leaving any scratches.

Kate explained: “Add a quarter cup of isopropyl alcohol, a quarter cup of vinegar, two cups of water and a tablespoon of cornmeal together. It just makes cleaning so much easier and your glass and mirrors won’t get streaks.” and they will shine.
Using isopropyl alcohol to clean windows and other glass surfaces helps create a streak-free finish, as it helps the cleaning solution evaporate quickly, creating a streak-free finish on the glass. However, alcohol needs to be combined with other ingredients for it to work at its best.
Vinegar is a non-toxic option that is a great alternative to store-bought glass cleaner.
Due to its acidic composition, vinegar works well to break down the thin film that builds up on glass surfaces. Sometimes it can be cleaned with baking soda to clean, although this is replaced with cornmeal in Kate’s cleaning solution.
The solution can be placed in a spray bottle or you can simply dip a rag into the mixture and wipe directly on the glass.

How to clean windows and glass with natural products
If you don’t have cornmeal on hand, there are several alternative methods for cleaning windows and glass surfaces.
White vinegar and baking soda are often hailed for their ability to achieve a streak-free shine. To get started, wet your glass with the shower head or splash with a bucket of water.
Next, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and use it to completely saturate the glass.
Depending on how dirty the glass is, you may need to let the vinegar sit for up to 10 minutes.
Alternatively, the experts at Clean Heart Maids say that lemon juice can be used instead of vinegar. Like the acetic acid in vinegar, the high concentration of citric acid in lemon juice can remove soap scum, limescale, and other buildup that can build up on glass.
Simply combine two tablespoons of lemon juice and a cup of hot water to make your own cleanser.
For an added kick, dip a sponge in baking soda and rub the glass. In the same way as cornmeal, baking soda works as a mild abrasive to remove any marks.
Once you’re satisfied with the results, rinse again with fresh water and use a microfiber cloth to buff the surface.
Using a squeegee to work from the top of the window or glass panel can also be helpful to ensure there are no stains or marks left on the surface.
