It’s almost 2023, which means there will be new TV series on the way. One of the shows that excites me the most is that 90s show on Netflix.
a spin-off of That 70’s Show, the series is set in 1995 and follows Leia Forman (Callie Haverda), who is desperate for adventure, or at least for a best friend who isn’t her father. So when she comes to Point Place to visit her grandparents Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp), Leia finds adventure living right next door to her in the form of a wayward neighbor named Gwen ( Ashley Aufderhide).
Soon, Leia meets some friends who make her feel like a part of the group, so she convinces her parents to let her stay at Point Place for the summer. Now Red and Kitty are faced with a whole new group of teenagers hanging out in their basement.
Not only are we introduced to a whole new group of teens (more on them later), but most of the original That 70’s Show cast members return as their iconic characters.
Along with Kurtwood and Debra Jo, Don Stark will return as Bob Pinciotti, Donna’s father and Leia’s grandfather, and Tommy Chong also returns as Leo.
Meanwhile, Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama will appear as special guests as they reprise their roles as Eric, Jackie, Kelso, Donna, and Fez, respectively.
Before we go into more detail about the new characters and the show, here’s the first full trailer, introducing most of the returning cast for the first time:
Okay, first of all, I definitely got really excited seeing Donna and Eric sitting on the hood of the car in the driveway of Red and Kitty, just like they did in That 70’s Show.
In the meantime, I’ll need 5-10 business days to process seeing Ashton and Mila, who of course are married in real life now, acting together again as Kelso and Jackie.
And honestly, Fez, who owns a hair salon called Chez Fez, is very on-brand.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, along with the returning cast, we have a new group of amazing characters in that 90s show that will surely obsess me.
First, there’s Donna and Eric’s daughter Leia, played by Callie Haverda. Netflix describes Leia as “smart like her mom.” [and] clumsy like her father.” Leia wants some adventure, and is surprised to find it in Point Place, of all places.
Joining Leia is Gwen, played by Ashley Aufderheide, who is the unruly neighbor from “Riot Grrrl” and the “unofficial leader of the new generation of Point Place kids.”
Then there’s Jay Kelso, played by Mace Coronel. Yes, Jackie and Kelso’s son! Jay is charming and flirtatious, or at least he tries to be. Although many people underestimate him, he considers himself a “deep thinker.”
And it looks like Jay and Leia are going to have a little summer romance, or, at least, Leia has a crush on him, which makes me scream.
Next we have Nate and Nikki, played by Maxwell Donovan and Sam Morelos. Nate appears to be just a “big dumb jock”, when he actually has a big heart and only loves his girlfriend Nikki and his best friends. Meanwhile, Nikki is a smart and driven student who will do anything to keep her GPA up.
There’s Ozzie, played by Reyn Doi, who is “insightful, sarcastic, and has an outlook beyond his years.” Ozzie is gay and wants nothing more than to be accepted by the world, just like his friends.
And finally, Andrea Anders plays Nate and Gwen’s single mom Sherri, who likes to let loose and befriends Kitty and Red once Leia joins Nate and Gwen’s group of friends.
I’m honestly so excited for that 90s show — as someone who considers the original series one of his favorite sitcoms — and I can’t wait to see this new and recurring cast in action soon.
