The City of Halifax is ready to say goodbye to 2022 with its annual Grand Parade celebration starting at 9:30pm on New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s Day is a designated business closure day in Nova Scotia, which means that most businesses will be closed on Sunday.
Since New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, some businesses may also be closed on Monday. It is best to call businesses you want to visit ahead of time to make sure they are open.
groceries and liquor
Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore: Open until 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve, closed New Year’s Day.
Gateway Meat Market: Open until 6:00 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
Dave’s Fruit and Vegetable Market: Open until 5:00 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
Costco: Open until 5 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
Walmart: Open until 6 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
NSLC: Open until 6 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
Bishop’s Cellar: Open until 8 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
Moosehead Cold Beer Store: Open until 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, open 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
Pharmacy
Most pharmacies are open on New Year’s Eve and some will be open on New Year’s Day, although hours may vary. Call your individual pharmacy to confirm.
malls
Mic Mac Mall, Halifax Mall, Scotia Square Mall, Park Lane Mall and Sunnyside Mall will be open until 5pm on New Year’s Eve and closed on New Year’s Day.
Dartmouth Crossing – Shops are open until 5pm on New Year’s Eve and close on New Year’s Day, although most restaurants, cinemas and cafes will be open during the holidays. Call individual businesses to confirm.
Bedford Place Mall: Open until 6 pm on New Year’s Eve, closed on New Year’s Day.
traffic and parking
From 6:00 pm onwards on New Year’s Eve, Halifax Transit will offer free extended bus service in support of the MADD Halifax Regional Chapter.
More than 40 bus routes will offer extended service into the evening. Information on individual routes can be found here.
Alderney Ferry will have extended service in the evening, with the last ferry leaving Alderney at 1:30am and the last ferry leaving Halifax at 1:45am
The Woodside Ferry does not operate on New Year’s Eve, the municipality noted.
On New Year’s Day, Halifax Transit and Access-A-Bus services will operate on holiday hours. There will be no ferry service from Alderney or Woodside during the holidays.
Free street municipal parking will be available on January 2.
municipal services
Regular garbage, organic and recyclable collection will take place as usual on January 2, the municipality said in a statement.
The Household Special Waste Depository at Bayers Lake is closed on New Year’s Eve and will be open on Saturday, January 7 from 9 am to 4 pm
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will be open until 2 pm on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day.
The 311 contact center is closed for general inquiries on New Year’s Day, though the municipality said customers can still call 311 “for urgent requests regarding transportation, municipal operations, facilities, animal services and illegally parked vehicles.”
The three customer service centers that provide face-to-face access to municipal services and payments will be closed on January 2.
Recreation
The municipality said many recreational facilities will operate irregular hours through Jan. 2 and people are asked to call their local facilities ahead of time.
The Emera Oval is open during the winter season and skating will be available on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Check the schedule here.
All Halifax Public Library branches are closed on New Year’s Day.
