It may come as a surprise that the 2023 Toyota bZ4X is Toyota’s first mass-produced electric vehicle. The auto giant has long been known for its innovative hybrid cars, but has been slow to introduce fully electric vehicles to its lineup. As Toyota’s first major foray (in a long time) into the electric vehicle market, the bZ4X faces close scrutiny, with one complaint being this model’s lack of a frunk.

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is an electric crossover SUV. It comes with a single-engine configuration that produces 201 hp or a dual-engine version that harnesses 214 hp. This small increase in power for the twin-motor bZ4X is unusual compared to other more powerful twin-motor electric vehicles on the market.

The cabin provides ample room for all passengers, including enough room to comfortably fit three adults in the back row. As for infotainment, Toyota equipped the bZ4X with a 12.3-inch screen, Apple CarPlay integration, and Android Auto connectivity.

Pricing starts at $43,215 for the single-engine base model. Upgrading to the twin-motor, four-wheel-drive 2023 bZ4X costs an additional $2,080, according to Toyota.

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X lacks a frunk

The front trunk, also known as “frunk”, is a common feature and benefit of electric vehicles. Without a motor under the hood, electric vehicles often use that extra space for charge storage. But that’s not the case with the 2023 Toyota bZ4X.

Without a frunk, the bZ4X looks more like a gas car under the hood than an electric vehicle. Interestingly, that’s not the only storage space missing from this Toyota.

The electric crossover also omits a glove box, which is highly unusual for any vehicle. Carwow reports that the designers intentionally left out the glove box to give the front passenger more legroom.

Instead of a glove box, the bZ4X provides an open space below the center console for storage. However, because this area is visible from the outside of the car, it does not offer as much security as a glove box with a door.

Between the lack of a frunk and a glove box, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X has a general problem with storage space. The trunk isn’t as big as some other electric SUVs, and even folding the rear seats doesn’t completely solve the cargo space problem.

Even if the Toyota bZ4X doesn’t feature a frunk, other electric vehicles have made innovative use of their front trunks.

For example, the Tesla Model S and Model X were some of the first electric vehicles to showcase the utility of the frunk. The front trunks on these Tesla electric vehicles aren’t huge, but they can still make packing for road trips a breeze.

As an example of how impressive a frunk can be, the Ford F-150 Lightning offers an astonishing amount of space. At 14.1 cubic feet, this trunk is as big as some trunks, giving the F-150 Lightning even more versatility.

The Lucid Air is an innovative electric sedan that boasts an equally smart frunk. It is conveniently accessible and larger than the front trunks of other electric vehicles. In addition to providing a frunk, the Air has underfloor storage. That seems to be what the designers of the Toyota bZ4X wanted with the storage space under the center console, but the Air’s storage provides more security.
