Gaming is the way many people prefer to spend their free time these days, and given that, the market has exploded. There are new game titles coming out every day, to the extent that it can be hard to decide what to play. However, over the past year some of the top contenders have stolen the show on Steam, so let’s dig into the best titles of 2022 thanks to the data provided by Valve’s Best of 2022 Games list.
It’s hard to pin down exactly which game grossed the most this year, as Steam lists them in categories ranging from “platinum,” which covers 1-12 in no particular order, to bronze, which covers 51-100.
Of course, however, there are some notable mentions in the platinum category that probably did very well, such as:
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II it was released in October 2022 from Infinity Ward and Activision, and in that short time it rose to the top. The game follows the operators of Task Force 141 through global conflicts and turmoil, allowing players to face off with their friends or fight alongside them in multiplayer or cooperative modes, respectively. The full game is available in steam for $59.49, which is 15% off the regular price until January 5th, the end of Steam’s winter sale.
elden ring is potentially the biggest hit this year, taking Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Role Performance at The Game Awards in early 2022. It is a fantasy action RPG from FromSoftware . Inc launched in early 2022 and shares a similar rise to fame as Obligations. It follows a player who enters a vast world in an effort to “wield the power of the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord in the Lands Between.” is available for buy on steam for $41.99, which is 30% off the regular price until the end of the Steam sale.
The best-seller list also includes games from previous years, so the list of top new releases narrows that down to just the top 2022 grosses. Of course, Obligations Y elden ring are on this list, as they also came out this year. However, we would be remiss if we re-listed them and didn’t mention games like:
Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Dying Light 2 Stay Human by Techland was released in February 2022, around the time of elden ring, which sidelined this game a bit, unfortunately. It is set 20 years after the ‘zombie’-like virus won and took humanity back to the Dark Ages; how appropriate, right? The player has to use his skills, agility, and combat prowess to survive and help reshape the world into its post-human state. This suspenseful game is available for $29.99a whopping 50% off the regular price, until the end of the Steam sale.
Lost it feels like a game that came out of nowhere and subsequently stole everyone’s hearts. Released in July 2022 by BlueTwelve Studio, it follows the player who is a stray cat separated from his family and alone. As the cat, you must “unravel an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten city”, while befriending a drone known as the B-12 who helps you along the way. This emotional roller coaster of a game is available for $23.99which is 20% off the regular price until the end of the Steam sale.
Of course, it can be a bestseller and also one of the most played games, which is what we found for all the titles mentioned above by going through the Most Played of 2022 category. This category measures the peak of concurrent players in 2022. This list has some free games too, like:
Released in late 2020 by Respawn Entertainment, this game seems to make the “top” list whether you like it or not. apex legends is a free hero shooting and battle royale game with different characters and powerful abilities that can make or break an arena fight. As we mentioned, this game is available free until the end of time.
counter strike global offensive
Again, this is just one of those games that always floats to the top. CS:GO It was released in 2012 by Valve and is still going strong with updates and new content being added. This is likely helped by their strong following in esports, but CS:GO It’s still a great game to play overall. In any case, this title is also free to play until the end of time.
In addition to all the games coming out of the gate, there are games coming out as early access titles that graduated this year and started garnering a lot of attention and money. Namely, we want to highlight the following games that made it from early access to full play and did well:
We are fans of games that change your point of view in a game, and Grounded it does exactly that by making you feel smaller, or literally makes you smaller. Released in September 2022 by the Obsidian Entertainment team, Grounded follows a player who has shrunk to the size of an ant and must survive in the backyard in some kind of “Baby I shrunk the kids” reason. this game is available for $26.79which is a 33% savings only through the end of the Steam sale on January 5th.
Raft is another game that is a little different than most and is great fun with friends. Released in June 2022 by Redbeet Interactive, Raft is an ocean survival game where you can play alone or with friends, sail in the open sea, collect debris and build a houseboat while following the story of what happened in this world. You can be a shark mage, an engineer or a combat specialist with abundant opportunities and experiences. Raft is available for $13.39which is 33% off the regular price until, you guessed it, the end of the Steam sale.
It’s hard to put VR games alongside other titles because it’s just hard to put the experiences of both side by side. There’s nothing like putting on a headset and fighting enemies, following a story, and interacting in first person with VR. Subsequently, Steam decided to put the best of VR games in their own category, as measured by the top grosses from VR-exclusive games:
Half Life: Alyx
When it comes to VR, there are some game-changing titles in terms of industry advancement and development. This includes Half Life: Alyx from Valve, which released in March 2020. It is a follow-up to the popular Half-Life series, which began in 1998, following Alyx Vance fighting the Combine, a vicious alien race colonizing Earth. This title, as long as you already have a VR headset, is available for $23.99which is 60% off the regular price until January 5th.
BONE LAB is another one of those game-changing titles, coming from Stress Level Zero in September 2022. It follows its big brother, BONES, with outstanding gameplay and very positive reviews across the board. Called an “experimental physics VR adventure,” players use weapons, tools, and items to battle across various “sets” and locations. you can jump in and start pounding skulls for $31.9920% off regular price, until the end of the Steam sale.
Finally, some games stood out on their own because they were the most played on Valve’s Steam Deck. These games were placed in the Steam Deck category, which is measured by daily active players, and there are some surprises like:
spider man remastered
With great power comes great responsibility, or in the case of the Steam Deck, great power comes great gameplay with spider man remastered from Insomniac Games in August 2022. You play as Peter Parker, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man fighting crime in Marvel’s New York City. You can swing on this title for $44.99, which is 25% off the regular price until the end of the Steam sale.
no man’s sky
no man’s sky is a title that feels like it’s been around forever. The ambitious game has been significantly improved and worked on since the troubled original release. In any case, Hello Games has done quite well with this title since its release in August 2016, providing regular content and updates for this space exploration and survival game. If you haven’t been able to test it or haven’t returned it before, maybe it’s time to give it another chance for $29.99, which is 50% off until January 5th.
There have been a lot of great games this year, too many to list in fact. So we’ve surely missed a few on this very sketchy list, but feel free to comment in the comments with your favorite 2022 titles. In the meantime, we’re looking forward to what 2023 will bring for the gaming industry.
