Blockbuster Returns to Canada for Netflix Comedy Starring Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and Madeleine Arthur

Spread the love

Blockbuster is back! At least in the fictional world, like Canadian actress Madeleine Arthur (Devil in Ohio, to all the boys I’ve loved before) joins Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove in a new Netflix comedy, aptly titled Blockbusterabout saving the last Blockbuster Video store.

Park plays Timmy, a devoted movie buff whose first and only job has been working at his local Blockbuster store, and is now the manager. Timmy gets a call from the company to tell him that he now runs the latest Blockbuster store, which doesn’t bode well for the future of his and the rest of his team’s work.

“Humans need to interact with each other,” Timmy proclaims, comparing Blockbuster to everyone who switches to watching movies on a streaming service, (you guessed it) Netflix.

While Timmy loves Blockbuster, that’s not the case for all of his employees. Eliza (Melissa Fumero), a mother who recently found out her husband cheated on her, is quite irritated that she returned to her high school job after going to Harvard, for a brief time, but remains Timmy’s longtime crush. a long time.

There’s also “Blockbuster mom” Connie (Olga Merediz), aspiring principal Carlos (Olga Merediz), homeschooled high school student Hannah (Madeleine Arthur), and Kayla (Kamaia Fairburn), whose father, Percy (JB Smoove) , owns the mall where the Blockbuster store is located. .

The rest of the series revolves around Timmy trying to save his Blockbuster from its bleak future, while each episode also touches on more specific comedic drama with some of the store’s employees, ranging from Carlos upset over the critic’s death local movie theater, even Connie. and Kayla thinking that Hannah’s mother may have been the victim of a local serial killer.

“I grew up going to Blockbuster… I have really special memories of walking the aisles of the store,” Arthur said. Yahoo Canada about stepping back into a store for the show.

“I love comedy, I was so excited to work with Randall, Melissa and JB, and the rest of the amazing cast, and the writing is so much fun. After reading the first script, it’s so full of heart, created by Vanessa Ramos, and it was kind of a no-brainer.”

Hannah is an interesting character on the show. She is naive and says things like she wanted to be a vet but the “language barrier” was too difficult, but we also learn that she is savvy with her personal finances.

“I love playing Hannah, she’s so quirky, she has a really unique sense of humor that was so much fun to dig into and develop,” said Arthur.

“She’s definitely an optimist… She’s very cheerful. She always means well, but sometimes misses the point a little bit and loves her co-workers, they’re like family, and she really wants to see Timmy succeed and keep Blockbuster afloat.”

The Canadian home of the last Blockbuster

So where did Netflix recreate a Blockbuster store in 2022? Right here in Canada, in British Columbia, in the Vancouver area.

Madeleine Arthur, who is originally from BC but now lives in Los Angeles, took the opportunity to show him Blockbuster co-stars in some of her favorite places.

“It’s always good to come home and see my friends and family, and then have a cast,” Arthur said. “Some people have been to Vancouver before, some haven’t, and I was able to show them around the city and take them to some of my favorite restaurants…and I took them snowshoeing and went to the Capilano Suspension Bridge,…Tyler and I also went to Whistler for the weekend.

“I tried to show them beautiful British Columbia and what Vancouver has to offer.”

In his career so far, Arthur has been able to take on and develop very different characters.

“That’s what I love about being an actor and that’s what excites me, to be able to play a character like Mae in Devil in Ohiowhere she’s dealing with so much trauma, and it’s very mysterious and enigmatic, and then she goes and plays Hannah, who’s also full of emotions that just manifest in a different way,” Arthur said.

“They are totally so different. They tell very different stories, and for me, that’s what I hope to continue to do, tell a wide variety of stories and play a lot of different characters.”

In the future, Arthur would love to do something a little different, a project in French.

“I would love to do a French film, I’ll keep saying that until it happens,” said Arthur. “I would love to do an action movie, I recently started boxing and was a gymnast growing up, and I feel like a kind of spy thriller or just any action would be really fun.”

“So I’m going to say, like a period piece in the 1600s and also, let’s do the 1920s. Basically, I’d like to do it all because I’m young and there’s time, and I hope this is just the beginning.”
