NICKEL PLATED Leader chad croeger he thinks he understands why his band’s detractors have been so vocal in publicizing their distaste for the Canadian rock act.
Possibly the most hated band in America, NICKEL PLATED they have earned such a powerful kind of hatred that it is hard to fathom what they did that was so terrible in the public consciousness. It has come to the point that people who enjoy NICKEL PLATED they are denying their fanaticism and hiding their CDs as criminal contraband.
asked by George Boots From Portugal “Global Metal” if you understand how NICKEL PLATED it became so unpleasant for so many people, Chad said (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “I think I fully understand where things went off the rails for us.
“I think because we write so many different types of music, I think if you were listening to a radio station anytime between 2000 and 2010, ’11, ’12 even, it would be hard to get away from us.” He explained. “Because if you didn’t want to listen to it and you switched to a different radio station, you’d probably listen to it there, and then you’d switch to a different radio station, you’d probably listen to it in a lot of different places. And it was very hard to get away from us, and that’s not my fault. [Laughs] We just write the songs. And with that comes the reaction. And then what happens is comedians start pulling jokes, and then they start appearing on TV, and then they turn into movies and things like that. And then it becomes this wave of, it’s fun to tease and it’s an easy joke. And I get it. I understand. There are bands that when I hear them on the radio, I… And they are very popular bands… I mean, we all have them. No one is exempt from that. There are certain bands that you just listen to and you just don’t like them. And other people can, half the world can love them, and I’ll just be like, ‘No. I just can’t listen to this band one more time [time].’ And just like everyone else, I just change the channel.
“But we became the scapegoat of the music industry for a while. But whatever. It’s just part of the band’s history.”
According to Chad, NICKEL PLATED isn’t the first group to experience the kind of harsh reaction that has earned him and his bandmates the title of “the world’s most hated act.”
“It’s funny because we were in the american music awardsand we were introducing, and we introduced DEF LEPPARD,” Chad remembered. “And when we walked backstage afterwards, joe elliott Y phil collen turned to me and they said, ‘Dude, thank you very much.’ I’m like, ‘What for?’ They were like, ‘For taking the trophy.’ We can pass them the baton for being the most hated band in the world right now. And I was like, ‘Oh yeah. ‘Because I want that.’
“And it’s funny, we went to dinner with AC DC in Chicago years and years and years ago,” Chad additional. “And all this came up. And brian johnson said when they released ‘Back in the dark’They were the most hated band on the planet. So I feel like we’re in good company. [Laughs]”
In 2016, a student named Salli Antonen at the University of Eastern Finland conducted a study to find out why there is so much hate directed towards NICKEL PLATED. Anttonen analyzed Finnish reviews of the band from 2000 to 2014 for his article, which was titled “Hypocritical Nonsense Interpreted Through Gritted Teeth: Discourses of Authenticity in Nickelback Album Reviews in Finnish Media”.
Anttonen found that criticism of the band became harsher as they became more popular, noting, “It became a phenomenon where journalists used the same (reasons) to attack them, and it almost made it an art to ridicule them.” .
Although the study relied solely on Finnish reviews of the band, critics’ animosity towards the group has been a worldwide phenomenon.
Anttonen concluded: “NICKEL PLATED It’s too much of everything to be enough of anything. They follow the expectations of the genre too well, which reads as empty imitation, but not well enough, which reads as commercial ploys and a lack of a stable, sincere identity.”
