Sports car maker Porsche is making a full steam ahead transition from internal combustion to electrification with the upcoming (albeit severely delayed) new second-generation Macan compact crossover.
It will be the automaker’s biggest new model in decades in a dramatic turnaround likely to upset a purist or two. Our sleuths behind the lens have given us a glimpse of the new Macan silhouette. So, let’s remove the camouflage and dive into everything we know to date.
Arguably already one of the best-looking vehicles in its class, the new Macan SUV tweaks the formula of the original with a more protruding appearance and an aerodynamic twist. Front styling features a lower center hood and split headlamps: the high beams are mounted low and the upper daytime running lights have four illuminated elements not dissimilar to the Mission-E concept.

Interestingly, the silhouette closely resembles today’s Macan, albeit with a buttery-smooth surface, delicate scallops and taut proportions. The door glass has become flush and frameless to reduce the coefficient of drag. However, it jarringly retains those old-fashioned conventional door handles in an era where many are opting for flush mounting.
In an anti-crossover move, the tailgate’s upper spoiler is now located below the rear glass and features active aerodynamic control to aid stability. Below is a full-width LED taillight assembly and rear diffuser panel that mimics the Taycan.
The Macan’s cabin has been thoroughly refitted, bringing it in line with the Taycan and 911. It features a new three-spoke steering wheel, a curved digital instrument cluster, and an infotainment screen that extends to a third passenger screen. Forward.
A center-mounted clock still takes pride of place on the leather-wrapped dash, and a row of stick controls surround capacitive-touch HVAC buttons where a gear selector would normally sit.
On the surprise and delight front, the Macan EV will feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates and destination planning to ease any charging infrastructure anxiety.
The basis of the new Macan is the Volkswagen Group’s 800v Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture shared with the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron. In the case of the Macan EV, the electric motor is positioned particularly to the rear, resulting in a slightly rear-centered weight balance with a ratio of 48 to 52 percent.
The handling equation is further enhanced by new twin-valve shock absorbers, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system, rear-axle steering that works below 50 mph (80 km/h) and an electronic locking differential. The all-electric Macan will have a completely revised double wishbone axle with a separate strut level at the front and Porsche boldly claims that it will “be the sportiest model in its segment”.

Insiders suggest there will be single and dual-engine options, the former with rear-wheel drive and the twin-engine with all-wheel drive capability. We know the most powerful launch variant will pump out a staggering 603 horsepower (612PS/450kW) and over 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) of torque, with even more extreme models likely to follow later on.
Using a 100kWh lithium-ion battery pack and 800V architecture, drivers can recharge DC fast chargers at up to 270kW. The general driving range remains unknown; however, owners can recharge from 5 to 80 percent in 25 minutes, which is impressive, if slightly slower than the 22.5 minutes required for a Taycan.
The Macan EV can be charged at 400-volt stations thanks to its intelligent “bank charging” technology that effectively splits the 800-volt battery into two 400-volt batteries, charging them in parallel without the need for an HV amplifier. And if you’re worried about uneven charge levels, don’t be: the Macan has that covered, too, aligning charge levels before recharging.
And that’s not all, as Porsche has been working some magic under the hood with its patented Integrated Power Box. Not only does it save space and reduce costs, but it includes three components: the built-in AC charger, high-voltage heater, and DC/DC converter, all in one elegant package.

Major competitors include the Macan’s platform sibling, the Audi Q6 e-tron, as well as the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar i-Pace, Genesis GV60, and Tesla Model Y Performance.
Beyond its (somewhat delayed) launch by 2024, the Macan EV will be joined by electron-powered replacements for the Cayman, Cayenne and Panamera. Interestingly, it will also be sold alongside an updated version of the current car at launch, presumably to keep ICE stalwarts happy, for the time being.
